I Didn’t Get Paid! Now What?

I didn't get paid! Now WhatIf you work as an independent contractor you will eventually encounter an issue with not getting paid. This is important for you to know when you go into mystery shopping. If your shop report was not rejected, payment should be made to you. The first thing you need to check on when you are missing your payment  is when the company usually pays.

If you have not worked for them before it is important to check their website for the standard payment time frame. Some companies pay the month following the shop, while others pay two months after the shop has been accepted. If you have worked for the company before and are familiar with the pay schedule, and still were not paid, it is still a good idea to check the company’s official payment policy.

Once you determine per the company’s policy that you should have already received payment, go to the company website and find the contact email address for payment issues. This will usually be listed in a company’s FAQ section or tab. Send a professional emailing with all the necessary information in it stating you were not paid. The necessary information will include all shop details such as the full location description. This will have the location name, store number, physical address, and usually a telephone number. It is best if you can copy the entire information block from your shop listing on your job board. That way everything is included. You also want to include a shop ID number if there is one, the payment amount broken down into shop pay and reimbursement, and, very importantly, the shop completion date. The email will usually sound something like this:

I am inquiring about payment for the following shop which was completed on 6/15/15:
Business Name (#0987)123 Main St. Some City, State Zip
As of today’s date, I have not received payment. Can you please advise when payment is to be expected? Thanks for your time.

Most companies handle numerous accounts, shoppers, clients, etc. Errors do happen, and they cannot rectify the situation unless you make them aware.  Most companies respond promptly to missed payments and handle your issue immediately. Everyone understands holding up someone’s money can put that person into a bad situation. However, if the company gives you the run around and strings you along, it is recommended you cease and desist from conducting shops for them until the matter is resolved. Even if the matter is resolved, if you do not like the manner in which it was resolved, it is recommended you no longer do business with them. No one likes to work for free, and your time is valuable. Simply find other companies to work for that compensate you as promised.

Christmas Time’s a Coming!

Christmas Time's a CominIt is getting to be that time of year again. The time with all the hustle and bustle and DEBT! For the next several months, it’s nothing but holiday after holiday and Christmas party after Christmas party. Mystery shopping is a great way to offset the cost of gifts, but it is important to start early. Now is the time! Enroll in mystery shopping for several different companies online and you can start the gift buying early!

There are a variety of mystery shopping opportunities for toy stores, specialty shops, and even jewelry stores. While the more expensive locations will not cover the entire price, it can definitely help offset the cost. Maybe this year you are considering a little getaway for the holiday. They have shops for that too! It will take some effort and work on your part, and may take a little away from the vacation; however, it will be a tremendous help come January when you do not have to pay the big bills others will have because of holiday expenditures.

Most mystery shops do not allow you to purchase gift cards, in general; and this is often a big holiday item because sometimes you just do not know what to buy your great aunt you have not seen since you were four! It is important to note that there are actually shops out there that are specific for gift cards and pre-paid credit cards! It should be no surprise that these type shops are highly sought by shoppers. So you need to act quickly when you find one in your area.

Another way to help save money is with grocery store shops. Everyone throws big holiday parties from October all the way until the New Year, and food costs are pretty high. Even if it is not your party, you always take something. Find a few grocery store shops and get those little expenses that add up reimbursed! And if you are throwing a party, splurge on the grocery store shops to maximize what you get back this party season.
The bottom line is the holiday season is meant to be enjoyed, not meant to sink you into a bottomless pit of debt. Take advantage of these opportunities to save a little of your hard earned money, and still have a wonderful holiday season. And if you like it, maybe you can keep it going year-round and put all that money away for next year’s holiday festivities to be even better.

Talk For Money!

Talk for MoneyDo you love to talk on the telephone and earn extra cash at the same time!?

Some people just love talking to people and mystery shops pay for people to chat on the telephone.

Many mystery shops offer telephone shops where you can conveniently stay home, simply dial a number, ask a person several questions, and just record their answers.

These shops pay anywhere from $5 to $15 a call and the best tip is that when you sign up for these telephone jobs during the middle to the end of the month, many companies might pay bonuses to get these jobs done. So you sometimes can make an additional $5 bonus, and if you only make three telephone calls, you can make almost $50 for talking to only a couple of people!

The calls only take about 15 minutes and the total process should not take more than an hour or so. These telephone numbers are toll free so you do not have to pay for these calls since the company pays for them. After the recorded call is made, the company would require you to submit an on-line questionnaire where you answer certain questions based on the call and, in some cases, one might need to write a small summary of the call.

Most telephone calls can be made anytime during regular business hours and generally only takes several minutes. You can make these telephone calls while your children are at school, or outside playing, or whenever you have free time. This is an easy, inexpensive way to make extra cash since just about everyone has a telephone, and there is no charge to the shopper to call any telephone number. So pick up the telephone, make several calls, and get paid to talk!

Fight Weekend Boredom with Mystery Shopping

Weekend BoredomNothing seems interesting on TV except endless reruns of the same shows from last season and you called all your friends, and no one is home.

It is one of those days where you have some alone time, but nothing seems like fun and the thought of cleaning the house sounds as pleasant as scrubbing the toilet. In these types of situations, experts advise that when you are not motivated into doing anything, then breaking up your time into small intervals of time can get you interested into accomplishing something for the day.

If you can think of spending just 15 minutes of your day on how to earn some extra cash, then log onto the computer and search for some mystery shopping websites for available jobs. Mystery shopping websites are easy to navigate and you can simply log on to the Shoppers login page, sign up, and within a few minutes, a list of numerous job opportunities is available for you to assign to yourself.

The sign-up process can take as little as fifteen minutes and you can sign up for numerous jobs for the week. The best part of mystery shopping jobs is that they only take a couple of hours to perform and are very flexible with an individual’s schedule. Most jobs can be done throughout the week and generally, within 30 days, you can get a paycheck for a couple hours of work.

So, when those days come and there seems like there is nothing to do, a great motivation for people is to mediate on the word “money” since that idea creates a huge incentive for most people. Just spending 15 minutes or more of your time registering for mystery shopping jobs can motivate your day into a stimulating productive day with thoughts of how you are going to spend that extra hundred dollars or more.

Invite Friends For Cash!

Invite Friends for CashMany mystery shopping companies want to attract as many shoppers as possible to complete their job inventories for the month.

Often, I get emails from companies that need more shoppers to complete their monthly job listings. If you already perform mystery shopping jobs for a company, sometimes these companies will offer bonuses to their current shoppers if they bring new shoppers to their businesses. An added bonus for referring friends to a particular mystery shopping website could make a difference in a regular shopper’s pay and help you earn extra cash.

Referring a couple of friends could easily earn $50 and up for a shopper and only takes a couple of minutes to contact some of your acquaintances or colleagues and have them sign up for various mystery shopping websites. This could make a big difference in a shopper’s regular pay for just referring friends. If you are a shopper, take advantage of this potential extra cash opportunity and inquire with your mystery shopping website customer service team, and ask if they will provide bonuses for referral of friends.

You might be surprised that many mystery shopping companies will offer special bonuses for referrals. All it takes is for a shopper to send a simple email to customer service regarding any bonus opportunities for referral of friends to their website. With so many different types of mystery shopping websites available, you can easily earn  extra cash for just referring a couple of friends to become regular shoppers.

As always, you want to ensure you refer reliable and responsible friends to your regular job sites since you always want to create a favorable impression on your own character and contract record.

Why You Are a Mystery Shopper

Why you are a mystery shopperA relative asked me why I became a mystery shopper. I thought for a moment and told her that it was fun and I really enjoyed making sure people had nice customer service experiences.

Not to mention, I added the person I shopped would receive an unbiased opinion on how they performed their job.

Since that first answer, I have elaborated my reply to others who ask the question why. Hopefully, my answers will help you to satisfy those who are inquisitive about being a mystery shopper. Remember though, never tell anyone the company you work for, as that is something you promised you would not do – check your confidentiality agreement.

That said, here are a few reasons I am a mystery shopper: I am able to keep my pay up to $600.00 tax-free. Yes I don’t pay taxes on the first six hundred dollars I make. I am able, with the help of a good accountant, to get my expenses reduced. I am able to write off part of my Internet bill and even the time I use my car getting to and from assignments. As a 1099 worker I am responsible for my own taxes and I try to make full use of my position.

I am flexible and I can work when I want. I am not on anyone’s set schedule. Yes, sometimes I work long hours. Sometimes I even work overtime, and I even have to give up my weekends or evenings. But overall I do have more time for myself than if I worked a 9-5 job. I am able to spend time with my family and my friends.

Furthermore, I am able to put aside the money I make on the side to buy things for my family and myself. I have learned to budget my money and get shops that fit my lifestyle. For instance, I have shopped apartments to get great decoration tips, and I have shopped gas stations for some free gas.

In other words I shop things I can use in my life. I make a difference in many ways!

Advice for Independent Contractors

Advice for Independent ContractorsAs an independent contractor, there are a couple of areas, to make sure are in order before and while completing mystery shops.

Create a Game plan.
Determine what kind of mystery shops you like to complete and how often you would like to complete a shop. Would this be weekly, monthly, or every so often? The great thing is most mystery shopping companies do not set a minimum shop limit. This gives you ultimate flexibility to complete mystery shops as you wish.

Once you determine how often you want to complete a mystery shop, watch your e-mail for monthly alerts. Many mystery shopping companies set out e-mail alerts with their available shops. Submit your request for your top pick mystery shops as soon as you see it. The good shops aren’t usually available for long.

Taxes.
Keep a simple spreadsheet, note pad, or computer folder to keep track of how much you are making each month. This allows you to determine if you need to pay taxes. Any amount over $600 should be reported on your taxes. Please confirm this advice with a tax expert.

Company Rules.
Make sure to check company rules for each mystery shopping company that you contract with so that you are in compliance with everything.

On Time Reporting.
If you want to continue to complete mystery shops, on time reporting will be key. This allows the mystery shopping company who hired you time to review and edit your report. It also allows their staff to reach out if they have any questions before the report is due to the company who hired them.

Overall, being an independent contractor allows you the flexibility that you probably only dreamed of prior to mystery shopping. If you follow the above suggestions, you will be off to a great start as an independent contractor for mystery shopping companies.

Mystery Shopping Over The Holidays

Family for the HolidaysFamily is in town for the holidays. Who doesn’t love family? Yet sometimes this can be a stressful time as you have many things to prepare during such a busy time of the year. Below are some tips to help you make it through the holidays with a little more cash in your pocket.

1. Plan ahead. Choose shops that are on route to whatever errands you need to complete. This can alleviate the stress of time.

2. Involve a key family member. If you can trust that your family member will remain low key, enlist a family member to help you with a shop. This works particularly well with restaurant shops.

3. Keep a short checklist. When you have family members in town, there can be a million things to do and you want to make sure you do not forget the important ones. As for your scheduled mystery shop, you want to make sure you complete the shop correctly. If not, that time and focus would be in vain, and you don’t want that, do you?

To avoid a mystery shop being marked invalid, make a checklist of the key things you need to complete the shop correctly. This includes any attachments, such as business cards, pictures, and receipts, if needed.

4. Use your phone. If you are able to be discrete, use your phone to take notes and keep track of important information such as agent’s names and descriptions. You may think that you will remember them, yet you never know.

5. Don’t forget that you can ask the key family member involved to keep track of certain things as well to alleviate your need to remember everything. One area could be the cleanliness of the restroom, if there is a need to note this in your report.

6. Don’t schedule more than you can realistically complete. I would advise you to accept 1-2 shops during the time that your family or friends would be in town. This decreases any potential stress on you or your time.

Overall, completing mystery shops while family is in town is completely possible. Just remember not to overdo it as your family or friends visit to spend time with you. Enjoy it.

4 Tips For A Successful Mystery Shop

4 Tips for a Mystery ShopI’ve been a mystery shopper for over 10 years and I would love to share my success tips with you.

1. Choose your shops based on your schedule.
Take a look at your schedule to note the times you’re available. From there, check the databases of the mystery shop companies that you contract with to choose shops that fit your availability.

2. Don’t assume all shops are the same.
Take the time to review the details of your current shop. Many parties are depending on us to get the facts and report them correctly. Each shop may have a different set of criteria or information needed to be collected and evaluated.

3. Print shop instructions and review prior to the shop. It’s best to print the shop notes, instruction and forms as close as possible to the time you plan to complete the shop. This allows for any updates from the mystery shopping company.

Don’t forget to grab business cards, snap a photo, and keep receipts, if needed.

4. On Time Submission. Make sure to plan time during the same day to enter your findings and submit your completed report before the deadline. This removes one thing from your “to do” list and allows the mystery shopping company to review, edit, and submit the report to the proper people.

These four steps will ensure you complete your first or next mystery shop successfully.
