Mystery Shopping Over The Holidays

Family for the HolidaysFamily is in town for the holidays. Who doesn’t love family? Yet sometimes this can be a stressful time as you have many things to prepare during such a busy time of the year. Below are some tips to help you make it through the holidays with a little more cash in your pocket.

1. Plan ahead. Choose shops that are on route to whatever errands you need to complete. This can alleviate the stress of time.

2. Involve a key family member. If you can trust that your family member will remain low key, enlist a family member to help you with a shop. This works particularly well with restaurant shops.

3. Keep a short checklist. When you have family members in town, there can be a million things to do and you want to make sure you do not forget the important ones. As for your scheduled mystery shop, you want to make sure you complete the shop correctly. If not, that time and focus would be in vain, and you don’t want that, do you?

To avoid a mystery shop being marked invalid, make a checklist of the key things you need to complete the shop correctly. This includes any attachments, such as business cards, pictures, and receipts, if needed.

4. Use your phone. If you are able to be discrete, use your phone to take notes and keep track of important information such as agent’s names and descriptions. You may think that you will remember them, yet you never know.

5. Don’t forget that you can ask the key family member involved to keep track of certain things as well to alleviate your need to remember everything. One area could be the cleanliness of the restroom, if there is a need to note this in your report.

6. Don’t schedule more than you can realistically complete. I would advise you to accept 1-2 shops during the time that your family or friends would be in town. This decreases any potential stress on you or your time.

Overall, completing mystery shops while family is in town is completely possible. Just remember not to overdo it as your family or friends visit to spend time with you. Enjoy it.

4 Tips For A Successful Mystery Shop

4 Tips for a Mystery ShopI’ve been a mystery shopper for over 10 years and I would love to share my success tips with you.

1. Choose your shops based on your schedule.
Take a look at your schedule to note the times you’re available. From there, check the databases of the mystery shop companies that you contract with to choose shops that fit your availability.

2. Don’t assume all shops are the same.
Take the time to review the details of your current shop. Many parties are depending on us to get the facts and report them correctly. Each shop may have a different set of criteria or information needed to be collected and evaluated.

3. Print shop instructions and review prior to the shop. It’s best to print the shop notes, instruction and forms as close as possible to the time you plan to complete the shop. This allows for any updates from the mystery shopping company.

Don’t forget to grab business cards, snap a photo, and keep receipts, if needed.

4. On Time Submission. Make sure to plan time during the same day to enter your findings and submit your completed report before the deadline. This removes one thing from your “to do” list and allows the mystery shopping company to review, edit, and submit the report to the proper people.

These four steps will ensure you complete your first or next mystery shop successfully.

Get Your Favorite Stores To Hire Shoppers

How to get your favorite shops to hire mystery shoppersHave you ever shopped at non chain store and felt you wanted to tell them to hire mystery shoppers? Maybe where you work? Or for a small company that your friend works for where you think mystery shoppers could help bring about a much-needed change? Well, here are some ways you can get companies to listen.

First of all, if you shopped at a mom and pop small town store and thought they needed some help in the customer service area. Try to make a report and send it to the manager or even the owner.  In your first report write a factual account of what happened and tell it in your own words. Give the manager/owner your telephone number or some means to contact you.

Or if they happen to have a suggestion box write your name and number and tell them to call you because you have a great idea for better customer service. Remember when you do get someone on the telephone – explain that you almost walked away but wanted the manager or supervisor to know of the service mystery shoppers provide.

Next contact the mystery company you work for and ask if they would want a lead. Some mystery shopping companies will pay you to find a lead. If one of the companies you work for won’t or cannot take a lead, research and see if you can find one that will.

If the manager does contact you then you can send your report to the company and request they send you a lead fee and maybe send you as mystery shopper at some times. Even if you don’t get sent out again – after all, the manger now knows you! Then rest assured your efforts to find leads and generate contracts for the company will not go unnoticed.

Think of all the areas where you use services. From the bank to telephone calls most areas are service oriented. If you see a place needing great service take the initiative and write the report. You just never know which company would need your report to make them better.

It’s Back to School Time!

It is almost back to school timeThe calendar is showing late summer and parents around the country are getting their children ready for fall and the start of a new school term. The list of school items to buy are on their minds.

Most parents hope to get all the shopping done before the first day of school. Some parents are also watching for the tax-free date most states have to help people with shopping. Yes, it would be great to also have some money to spare for things that will pop up. Once you have your list in hand get ready to shop and make money.

Mystery shopping or secret shopping can help you even if all you shop are apartments. For example, you probably know there are other shops available to the seasoned shopper. If your scheduler knows you are consistent and reliable then you can email and ask for more apartment shops. It never hurts to just ask.

In addition, there are mystery-shopping companies that pay you to shop the bigger office supply stores. If you don’t know how to find these then go to the MSPA (Mystery Shopping Providers Association) website: http://www.mspa-global.org/en/homepage.html – create an account and do a search for the companies that routinely need shoppers for supply stores.

Another way to find jobs is to actually search your local craigslist. Sometimes mystery shopping companies put jobs in the classified section of the craigslist ads. Again be careful where you find the jobs, as in anything be aware. Another place to check are online blogs where people chat about mystery shopping that way you can find companies that have already been tested by other shoppers.

It would be better that you find these companies as soon as you can. You will need to fill in your information beforehand, but remember the more companies you get the more jobs you can have. Once you line up some other companies you will see you can have the extra money you need to get you through the start of the school year.
Being a shopper this time of year can be fun and profitable.

Weeding Out a Scam

Weeding out ScamsGuaranteed six-figure income your first year!!  Make $40,000 a month from home! It is easy to see how this type of advertisement for becoming a mystery shopper is likely leading you into a scam.

Many shoppers have been taken in by much less of a paycheck, and it is important to do your checking before taking on a job.  If a company sends you money orders to cash and send them back $50.00 while you keep the other $4,000.00, beware it is a scam.  The money order is fake, and your bank will have you paying for the money order.  It is possible you could be criminally charged as well.

If a company offers to pay you up front for a shopping assignment, this could be legit.  To be on the safe side, check it out first.  See what other shoppers have to say on forums and discussion boards. Check out reviews of the company online, and always check the companies rating and reputation with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Many people make a decent living as a full-time mystery shopper.  Do not be discouraged, but be realistic about how much money you can really make.  Always be cautious about giving your social security number to a company or your checking account information, even for direct deposit.

Again, confirm the company is legit and do an Internet search regarding the company.  Find out what other shoppers are saying about the company.  Many companies offer the option of being paid via a paper check. If they do, try them out for a few assignments.  Make sure they pay as they promise, and then decide if you want to provide checking account information for direct deposit.

The most reliable and best way to get paid from companies is through PayPal. This way you do not have to give them your checking information.  However, most reputable companies will eventually ask for your social security number. Again, make sure they are legitimate first.  If something about what they are doing does not seem quite right and you think it is a scam, trust your gut and move on to another company.

Technology and Mystery Shopping

0010882705V-565x849Mystery shopping is becoming more and more technologically advanced, just like everything else we do.  While many companies have been using video and/or audio recordings for shops for many years, the equipment is becoming much cheaper for shoppers to own themselves. This means a company does not have to invest as much by providing shoppers with the equipment.

It also means as a shopper, if you have your own equipment and experience in using it, you can get more shops. Ironically, the recorded shops typically pay more and the reports are often shorter as you are submitting a video of the entire encounter.  An audio shop will also typically pay more, but still involves nearly as much reporting as a non-audio shop.

Other advances have come about with the use of smart phones.  Shoppers can check-in by using a mobile device and confirm the shop location.  The company can also verify the shopper went to the location and the length of time the shopper was on-site.  Many companies have also developed mobile platforms for entering shop reports, making the use of smart phones and tablets a very convenient method of reporting for shoppers and companies alike.  This allows companies to receive the reports sooner, and confirm certain details rapidly. For the shopper, it is primarily a time saver.  And in the world of a mystery shopping, time is money.

Another great way to maximize the use of a smart phone and/or tablet in a mystery shopper’s operation is to use the device as a stopwatch or timer, take photos with it, and possibly record audio or video.  While it is usually not advocated to use these devices to record audio or video, it can help in some cases.  However, they should only be used if you can do it inconspicuously. In cases where the company you are mystery shopping for does not have a mobile platform, it is easy and convenient to use your smartphone to jot down your shop notes.  As often as the average person uses a smart phone throughout the course of a day, it is nothing out of the ordinary that would call attention to you or identify you as a shopper.

Undercover Mystery Shops

Do You like Undercover WorkThere are numerous mystery shopping jobs available to make extra cash each month on a part-time basis and there are some that involve working like an undercover person. Technology has become instrumental with mystery shopping jobs and video shopping is one of the latest innovative advancements in mystery shopping that earns much more money than regular mystery shops!

Shops that offer video shopping often include video tapping the shopping site and recording the conversation of the employee. These shops are secret video taping and the company will send you all the video equipment you need to secretly tape and record an evaluation of their employee. Once you sign up for these types of video shops, the mystery shopping website video department will mail out the equipment necessary to perform these types of jobs.

The video equipment is easy to use and is often attached and concealed under your shirt.  The video recorder is similar to a regular tape recorder, but the equipment is a tiny video recorder that is attached behind the shirt you wear and it records the entire conversation and films your interaction with your target shop’s employee.

The demand for video tapping has increased since more employers are interested in how to improve their business.  Some people enjoy participating in undercover work or just like the mystery of learning how to use and operate video equipment.  The best part of these shops are that they generally pay a higher price of a regular shop and often a shopper can ask for a higher cost to perform these shops.

Legit Mystery Shopping Jobs

shopper-scamFinding legitimate mystery shopping work does require some work to obtain. There are so many scams today, and there are so many people willing to use different means to get a hold of your personal information that you must be aware. Be careful who you give your time, information, and money to in this business. Here are some tips and keep these in mind when checking a company:

First of all, you should never send money to a mystery shopping company in order to start work with the company. If any person or company asks for money up front then this could be a scam.

Secondly, doing a simple Google search may not yield the best results at first. You might have to sift through the list of companies and see which one would fit your requirements. Your first search should be with local mystery shopping companies because you would be able to know if they were legitimate just by their local telephone number and address. A simple telephone call would help you determine if the company has a true address or a post office box.

Lastly, when a mystery shopping company asks you to deposit money into someone else’s account then that too is a scam. Any time money is a concern you need to take care and look carefully at the company you are working for and with. Most companies do not ask for large sums of money.

Remember: Most mystery shopping companies do not ask for anything except your email, address and telephone number.

Finding A Legit Shopping Job

is mystery shopping worth itMystery shopping work can be fun and it can be beneficial. It can be rewarding and you would be helping businesses keep their customers. Money made can be used to supplement your income or help you save for another purpose. Finding legit work can be tricky and sometimes hard to find. Google searches do not always help, as they do not shift out the companies that have a long history of being a scam.

Too many people trusted companies to help them find work and instead found themselves in the middle of scams.

There are many legitimate companies that are out there, but sometimes the process of applying can be daunting. For instance, you might be wary of entering your social security number in a form. But keep in mind as an independent contractor you are required to give some form of government identification to your employer. If you don’t feel comfortable then call or email the company and ask for help.

Furthermore, beware of mystery shopping companies that ask you to send information to a post office box. The known mystery shopping companies have a physical address or a website with a secure area for entering private data. Again if you ever feel uncomfortable then ask questions. Ask question by email, but don’t send your sensitive information over email.

So keep in mind that telephone numbers and websites are important for mystery shoppers to be aware of today.

Shop Scheduling Tips

Scheduling tipsWhen you schedule yourself for any mystery shopping jobs, there are a couple of insights that a shopper should keep in mind to successfully perform a job. Normally, there is a job scheduler assigned to the assignment that was selected by you who keeps track of the status of the shop. They may also provide a contact person to email or call for any problems or scheduling conflicts.

It is also important to keep your scheduler aware of any extensions necessary as soon as possible since your job might be deleted from your assignment log if your scheduler does not receive your request in a timely manner. If you have any emergencies or problems completing the shop, notify your scheduler as soon as possible so you do not waste anymore time working on the shop or promptly explain any difficulties in completing the shop.

Most schedulers are easy to work with and want the jobs done as soon as possible, but they also have many shoppers contacting them and might miss your email or they might not notice an approaching deadline which could cause you to lose a shop opportunity.   A shopper needs to be sure that they are on top of their due dates since the system or scheduler will often delete your shop, even if you already did part of it, if the shop has an overdue date.

Monitoring a job extension email confirmation from the scheduler is necessary to ensure your shop is done in an easy and fast manner.   So ensure you establish a regular communication basis with scheduler way ahead of the time of your due date just in case you do need an extension or run into difficulties in finishing the job since an extension is usually granted.
