Is Mystery Shopping a Good Start for a New Writer?

Is Mystery Shopping a Good Start for a New WriterIn a world where writing is a dying art and texting jargon has become the norm, writers are looking for places to hone their skills while earning money. A good place to start is mystery shopping.

This will give you a boost in finances while you are waiting for that big novel to publish, will give you quality feedback on your writing style, will allow you to earn some money, and give you the opportunity to shop and have a little fun with role playing.

Is it truly a way to hone your skills as a new writer?  Any practice at writing, regardless of style, will give you some helpful hints.  It may even give you the idea to write a story about the life of a mystery shopper!  In addition to mystery shopping, if you prove to be a quality shopper with quality reports, you may be brought on board by a company or two to be an editor.  This will further enhance your skills and income.

What type of writing can you expect in mystery shopping?  Different types of shops call for different types of reports.  Many will ask for at least a small narrative describing your shopping experience.  Some of the more in depth shops and higher paying shops will require more narratives.  An example of this is an apartment shop.  Even if it is recorded on video, companies also want a very detailed narrative regarding the entire experience.

It can take thirty to forty minutes to complete all narratives, maybe longer depending on your experience.  This can definitely build your ability to describe situations as companies want more than a simple, “I would have rented from this associate” type statements.  You have to give them the how and why.  This can enhance your vocabulary and help you piece together informative, yet concise, descriptions more easily.

If your goal is a little extra income while practicing your writing you may choose to stay clear of simple fast food shops.  Many of these require little, if any narrative, and are simple fact checking expeditions.  But if you need the money, they certainly do not deplete your writing ability.  So, if the writing field is slow with work, feel free to expand your horizons and supplement with mystery shopping.  But be warned, you may become a permanent shopper and put writing on the back burner!

Need A Merchandising Job?

Need A Merchandising Job?Mystery shopping jobs normally involves part-time work and allows a person to schedule jobs in a flexible manner.  However, there are many mystery shopping companies that are also looking for individuals who are interested in working in the retail industrial area.  Most of these merchandising jobs begin as part-time work and usually involve performing jobs in various retail stores.

Merchandising jobs usually have set hours and days and involve replacing store products and setting up store displays.  However, many of these merchandising jobs often lead to full-time employment.  Since a merchandiser is usually under the lead of a supervisor who handles a chain of retail stores and ensures that all store products are carefully replaced and stocked, this type of job can lead to full-time employment.

The experience gained as a retail merchandiser can lead to a supervisor or team leader job and that usually involves more hours a week than a regular mystery shopper who does part-time work, and can sometimes lead to full-time employment.  I have done part-time merchandising jobs and most of the supervisors that I worked with stated that they began as part-time merchandisers and slowly worked their way up the ladder.

If your schedule allows you to work on a fixed workweek, and the retail area interests you, than taking a part-time merchandiser job in this area might be the stepping stone needed to obtain experience and possibly lead to a full-time job. These merchandiser jobs tend to service a wide circle of chain stores and are always in need of employees to monitor, restock, and service various company products.  So, if you can’t find a full-time job right now, maybe working as a merchandiser might be a possible way to find a new avenue of full-time employment.

Work for Students and Moms

Part-Time Work

Students and moms probably have one of the worst times finding part-time jobs to obtain extra cash since their daily schedule is usually fixed with classes or taking care of the children and finding a job to work around their schedule can be difficult.Luckily, most mystery shopping jobs are flexible and cater to people who have fixed schedules.

Many mystery shopping jobs can be done almost any day of the week which could include scheduling hours during the early morning, afternoon, evening or even late evening!  Some shopping jobs even allow you to bring your children with you.

Mystery shopping jobs usually only require you to contact a specific target person by telephone, or conduct an on-site visit, and ask him or her some pertinent questions about their specialty.  You then record their answers and fill out a question and answer form.  After completing the form, you only have to submit it on-line to the mystery shopping website for payment.  Most mystery shopping jobs pay in 30 to 60 days and you only have to rate an employee‘s performance on a computer form.

Further, these jobs generally only take a total of two to three hours to complete and you can work any day that works best for you.  All students and stay at home moms visit stores all the times anyways to obtain school, family, or children supplies, so you might as well get paid to make that usual weekly trip.

So, stop complaining about not being able to make extra cash due to student or family responsibilities that restrain your time to find a compatible job to work around your schedule. With mystery shopping jobs, they make the jobs easy and flexible and everyone always needs extra cash each month.

My Shop Was Rejected

My Shop Was Rejected!A rejected shop is no reason to quit mystery shopping altogether.  Most companies will not just outright reject a shop.  They will ask for clarification on your responses and, possibly, some tidying up of your narratives.   If you lied on a report, and there is video evidence at the location shopped, you may be in danger of a flat out rejection.  Other than that, most companies will give you a chance to revise and resubmit your work.

A rejected shop is not the end of the world, and not even the end for conducting shops for that particular company. You can contact the editors and/or schedulers to get specifics about why the shop was rejected and how you can improve the chances of your next submission being accepted with no questions asked.

Companies are in need of good, reliable shoppers and are usually eager to groom new shoppers into who they want conducting shops for them regularly. The most common reason for a mystery shop being rejected is not following the guidelines and instructions given for conducting the shop.  This is why it is so important to read over all directions, guidelines, and report forms before you do the shop.  If you have any questions, contact your scheduler before you complete the shop.

If you shop outside the prescribed time-frame, your shop will be rejected.  That includes time of day, as well as actual day or date shopped.  If you fail to shop the correct department or correct person, your shop will very likely be denied.  With a target shop, sometimes things come up when on-site that make the target unavailable.  Ask your scheduler what to do in these instances before you conduct the shop.

Rarely are poor reporting skills used for rejecting shops entirely.  The option is given to work on the narrative, or the shop may be accepted and you will receive a lower rating with that company.  If you receive a low rating, contact the editor and ask for helpful hints and ideas on how to improve your rating.  Again, they are usually quite willing to help you do a better job as it makes their job easier also.

Money Tight? Pay for Vacation with Mystery Shopping!

shutterstock_131399510Everyone likes to take a trip, a vacation, or just a break to get a little R & R. And everyone needs some time to relax. Most of the time the biggest issue with taking a vacation is that it requires extra money. Many mystery shoppers are doing shopping to supplement their income from a full-time job; it is not out of the question to figure that money can be tight. So how do you take that much earned vacation? Use your mystery shopping!

I don’t just mean to use the money you earn from mystery shopping. While that is a great idea, and can certainly help, I mean to take vacations that are mystery shops. There are companies out there that offer reimbursement for lodging and some meals, possibly even a visit to the on-site bar or lounge. Some companies offer reimbursement for cruises leaving from various ports. Make note of the word “reimbursement.” Most companies will not pay you up front. So be aware of that going in, and have the money to spend on the vacation upfront.

Believe it or not, some companies have mystery shops for golf courses, resorts and spas as well. Do your research and you can take a great vacation and get paid to take it! Step things up a notch by using multiple companies to score various attraction tickets, meals from local restaurants and fast food establishments, and even gas shops.

The downside of all this is that you will have to take the time for mystery shopping, make notes, and enter the shops in a quality manner. Just like any other shops you do, you need to allow time to enter honest, well-written reports. Take this into consideration when you are planning your trip. You might want to take a couple extra days of vacation to allow a little more relaxation time, depending on how many shops you plan to do. Be careful not to overbook yourself for shops on a vacation. If it isn’t worth the pay and the distraction from your time off, do not commit to it. And be aware that any company planning to pay you for lodging and possibly travel reimbursement (limited airfare, gas cost) expects high quality reporting that is very well written.

Fast Food Shops, Are they Worth It?

Food mystery shopsFast food shops seem to be some of the most common mystery shops available. They are a consistent and easy shops that give you experience. The pay usually includes reimbursement for your food and a little extra. So is it really worth your time?

If you are just getting started in mystery shopping, there is no better way to start than with some simple fast food shops. Most of them are quick and simple with easy reports that require maybe fifteen minutes of your time to complete. There are typically minimal narrative responses with a selection of answers similar to multiple choice questions. You learn how to time things and take quality notes inconspicuously. In addition, the experience provides a little sustenance and some extra cash. One thing is for certain, you probably won’t get rich on fast food shops, although you may become obese.

Once you become a more experienced mystery shopper you can be more selective about the shops you take. The goal is to make a profit, not break even, and certainly not lose money. Waiting to pick up fast food shops late in the month that have bonuses attached because they have fast approaching deadlines is a good strategy. You can also pick up shops that were dropped last minute by another shopper. You may choose to do these shops even without a bonus, simply to build a rapport with the company as a dependable shopper. That is another role of the fast food shop; you can earn the trust of schedulers and get a better shot at higher paying shops in the future.

If you are a college student just looking to eat on a regular basis, fast food shops can be the way to go. You provide the money upfront the first month for shops, and then when you get paid the next month, you use those payments to do more shops. So you are just reinvesting your profits back into the business. This is great for anyone who has hit a rough patch and needs money for food.

When do you say no to a fast food mystery shop? If the pay does not cover the cost of gas to get to the shop and back, decline it. If you cannot keep the commitment, decline it. If the reports are too taxing, requiring multiple narratives just for a burger and fries, decline it. The headache should never outweigh the payoff.

Shopper anonymity

The importance of anonymity in the mystery shopping business is much empathized and listed often in shop instructions. How can you expect the leasing agent, sales clerk or wait staff to act normally if they think they are being watched?

You can imagine how I honed in on a story on my local TV news station when I heard the words “Mystery Shopper”. The report of the suspicious incident in the parking lot of a Bay Area outlet mall identified the woman as a long time mystery shopper from Mesa, AZ. The co-worker and friend interviewed for the segment wore sunglasses and a scarf in her attempt to remain anonymous.

When I later reviewed the news articles posted on-line I found the names of two other mystery shoppers who seemed to know the Mesa woman and were identified as belonging to a mystery shopping association.

The more I thought about this incident the stranger it seemed. How often do you hear of the occupation of a victim in a new report? Okay, maybe if the person was a celebrity or well known, but, a mystery shopper!

I have been in this business for a few years and, while I enjoy the role playing and mystery involved while on the job, the secrecy when I am not working is the thing I like least. My friends and family are aware that I am a mystery shopper. Not being able to discuss what I am doing with them is like going on vacation and not being able to ‘bore’ them with the photos. Now I have to wonder about how bored they really would be. It seems the title Mystery Shopper holds great interest.
It would be good to hear other’s thoughts on this. Be assured, I will still remain anonymous.
